Historical Background of Ferghana Valley

Fergana - the administrative center of Fergana region.
The city is home to 230,000 people. Covers an area of 95 sq.km.

Etymology origin of the name Fergana (Fargona) associated with two words from Persian: "pari" (angels) and "khona"(house) – “the house (city) of angels”. There is another interpretation of the name Ferghana (Fragony): "area between mountains".

Shady avenues with centuries-old plane trees growing here, chestnuts, oaks, pines provide invigorating coolness on hot summer days, an abundance of flowers in the squares and parks one of the greenest cities in Uzbekistan earned him the reputation of the “city – garden”.

Fergana is relatively young city. Its foundation is associated with the name of the commander of Russian Expeditionary Unit and the first military governor of Fergana region, formed in 1876, after the abolition of the Khanate of Kokand, General Skobelev M.D.

Because Kokand was very densely built up and its geographical location exposed to dusty winds, it was decided to build a new large settlement, it must have been a military and administrative center of the Fergana region. This is the construction period of a new Marghilan, which was located at a considerable distance from the old town on the lands of the villages Chim, Sym and Charimgan.

The new town had wide streets, big avenues of paved roads, it was well landscaped. Water supply and irrigation was carried out to the city through Margelansayu, which crosses almost the entire city. Residential buildings - often one-storey mansion type; public buildings were concentrated in the administrative center of Marghilan. This building is the Military Assembly, built in 1878-1879; building of the Military Governor of Ferghana region (1879-1890).

Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is built, at the opposite site - a monumental building of male gymnasium. A little later, the building of a Mariinsky women's college (1890). There are shopping facilities, shops, interesting complex of pavilions built of Voskresensky market.

In 1908 the city was placed a monument to the founder of the city - the first military governor of Fergana region MD Skobelev, and New Margilan city was renamed Skobelev. In 1919 it received its present name Fergana.

Today the city is a major industrial center of the country. It focused on 17 large enterprises, including Fergana refinery, JSC "Azot", JSC "Fargonadonmahsulot", JSC "Fargona yog-moy", JSC "Avtooyna". Operates 28 joint ventures.

Ferghana is the cultural center of the Ferghana Valley, the city of students, which operates 47 schools, State University, Polytechnic Institute, a branch of the Tashkent University of Information Technologies, a subsidiary of the Tashkent Medical Academy.

According to the Resolution of the President R.Uzbekistan "On measures to implement the master plan for the city of Fergana, construction and reconstruction of social and transport and municipal infrastructure in 2012-2015,.", Started a lot of work to transform, modernize Fergana.

Construction of new homes, shops, public buildings, is the expansion and reconstruction of streets, many industries adversely affecting the ecology of the environment, dismantled and transferred outside the city. This creative work is to transform the Fergana, to make it more attractive and beautiful.
